Per Ardua Ad Astra
(Through Struggle To Stars)
This is one of the test prints for the 2nd project in my
Intro to Printmaking Class. Printed from a Linoleum Carved
pad that took about 3 or 4 steady days to carve.
The theme for this project is "Beyond the Edge", my concept was
inspired by black history, civil rights, and everything else that
drives my family (father). The design has a noose tied to a chain being
(discrimination/struggle) broken at the fist (empowerment/pride) with
"Per Ardua Ad Astra" written into the arm. The background image is
the American flag with melted stripes and 6-7 stars.
The imagery against the American Flag, is in reference to the
discrimination and struggle of ethnic races in America, including
that of the past and current events. From slave ships to Emmett Till
to Co Intel Pro to Troy Davis.
(The stars, originally drawn as 6, are in reference to Juneteenth).
